Shaye and I had been talking for months about friends of ours that we had feelings for, never actually revealing to each other who these friends were. Perhaps for fear of wrecking any remote chance and jinxing the possibility of it turning into something. One day Shaye came in to write and said she thought "Complicated" was a great title for the subject matter of falling in love with your friend. She came to the right place. It didn't take long for me to start singing a melody over the word Complicated and getting a groove and the music going. The lyrics came fairly easily, most of them were taken right out of pieces of our conversation, I love it when that happens. This is so accurately real life, it's scary. I've only lived this song at least a dozen times so far, I always seem to fall for my friends.
