I originally got this idea when I was in a
hospital room with my sick brother, and he was on the 5th floor and had a
great view of the city. I brought the idea to a friend of mine, Chuck Jones,
but we didn't write it. I never expected my brother to pass away and it
devastated me. I ended up writing a poem about him called Room With A View
on Christmas Day (the day after he passed away) and it was printed in the
booklet everyone got at the church and read at his burial. After that, I
thought that was all it was ever going to be, just a poem for my brother.
But when I had another writing appointment with Chuck months after his
death, I decided I needed to make it into a song. It was too important.
Because I had already brought Chuck the idea before, I thought it only right
to finish it with him. I'm so glad I did, I think he was my psychologist and
therapist for a couple days.
