On the day this song was written, Troy and I had
finished a whole different song called "If I'm Not Over You." It was about 5
o'clock in the afternoon and we had just done a worktape for it and finished
writing out the final lyric. I don't know why, but for some reason I just
started talking about the title being a whole different song and moments
later started singing, "If I'm not over you, by the time I get to Georgia"
and I think I hummed a bit and sang, "there was a time when I'd do anything
for ya" (it rhymed, which was cool) "but this time baby I won't turn
around." Then I kicked in with the guitar, and it totally inspired Troy and
I. We were like, where is this going? When the first line of the 1st verse
practically fell out, it dictated to us what the whole song was about. It's
a sad and endearing kind of song where a woman realizes she is never going
to get what she wants or needs from the person she thought was the one. So
she has to leave, and start over, and go through the loneliness that comes
with it. |
