The melody fell out so traditionally, and its simplicity haunted us. It was almost too easy. We fell in love with the song immediately, and as soon as we demoed it, the band was like, “Man, I haven’t played a song like this in a long time!” And I started singing it live, and the audience was singing it back by the end and lighting lighters - and they had never heard the song before. So I came back and said, “This is special - I kind of think we need to cut this song.”
