I got this idea when I was riding a Greyhound
bus from Edmonton to Calgary. As I approached the city of Calgary, I could
see planes flying in and out of the airport, and I started imagining things.
Things like hundreds of people scurrying around the city to get to the
airport to pick up their loved ones, and how to me, those planes were no big
deal, but to someone else, it might be their life: their mother, husband,
child, sister or best friend - someone you love. For some reason, this
thought moved me. I stored the idea in my head and felt it was going to be a
great song one day. Well, that day came when I had to write for the first
time with a Hall of Fame songwriter named Charlie Black. I was nervous, and
I wanted to come in with a great idea. I had learned in this town, if you’re
the newcomer and you’re writing with somebody who’s had more success than
you, it’s an unwritten rule, but you should come in with the idea. You don’t
have to, but there’s a chance they might not write with you again if you
don’t. My aim was always to gain my co-writers’ respect, so I’d usually work
on stuff the night before. This was written back in ’97 and we cut it for
the first record in ’99, but we didn’t nail it, so I saved it to get it
right on the next one. |
